“I can’t believe Dance Mom has come back. I think that’s crazy! But I’m actually really excited to watch it, and I’m excited to see what it’s turned into,” Mackenzie exclaims. Dance Moms season eight is currently in production after a two-year hiatus that saw infamous dance studio owner Abby Lee Miller spend time in federal prison and face a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy.
Dance Moms: Resurrection is set to premiere June 4 on Lifetime. So will Mackenzie be back on the team? “I don’t think so. I mean, I love reality but at the same time I’m trying to stay away from it. It’s a little much,” she says with a laugh.
Familiar faces of seasons past including Jojo Siwa, Kendall K, Nia Sioux, and Kalani Hilliker are absent from the Dance Moms: Resurrection trailer. Mackenzie has some advice for the likely all-new cast. “Just don’t cry. You might, you know, tear up a little bit. But I think, just stay strong and don’t listen to all of the criticism happening. I think just have fun with it. That was, like, the most important thing.”
She certainly seems to be having fun preparing for new projects. “I’m working on lots of music right now, and I’m actually working on a tour soon. So I’m super excited about that,” Mackenzie tells CHRISTYreports, adding that the tour will feature lots of singing and dancing.
With fans spanning the globe and over 12 million Instagram followers, anything Mackenzie does is a surefire hit. But the fourteen-year-old downplays her larger than life image. “I’m a very normal kid, and I’m very humble, and a lot of people just think that I…think I’m better than everyone, but I really think that everyone is the same.”

Dance Moms premiered on Lifetime in 2011 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, capturing the intense world of competitive dance through the lens of ambitious mothers and their talented daughters. The show followed Abby Lee Miller, a controversial dance coach, and her elite competition team at the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh.
Each episode showcased the rigorous training and high-stakes competitions that the dancers faced, as well as the personal dynamics among the mothers, which often led to dramatic confrontations and emotional conflicts. The show's combination of talent, tension, and theatricality resonated with audiences, leading to high viewership and numerous seasons.
As the series progressed, the cast evolved, with several dancers, including Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler, gaining immense popularity and becoming household names. Maddie, in particular, stood out for her exceptional talent and was often favored by Abby, which sparked jealousy and rivalry among the other mothers and dancers. This tension became a central theme of the show, with storylines frequently revolving around favoritism, friendships, and the pressure to succeed in the competitive dance environment.
The series also introduced various spin-offs and specials, expanding the Dance Moms franchise and exploring different facets of the dance world.
Despite its popularity, Dance Moms faced criticism for its portrayal of the pressures placed on young dancers and the contentious relationships among the mothers. Abby Lee Miller's coaching style was often deemed harsh and controversial, leading to debates about the impact of such environments on children's mental health.
The show also faced significant changes over its run, including legal troubles for Abby, her eventual imprisonment, and the departure of key cast members. Ultimately, Dance Moms concluded its original run in 2019, but its legacy continues to influence reality TV and the dance community, leaving a lasting imprint on pop culture.
